How to deal with failure

June 14th, 2023

I'm back! It's been a while, and here we are, halfway through 2023 already. It feels like I just witnessed the New Year's fireworks yesterday. Today, I want to delve into a topic that has significantly aided me in achieving my goals, and I hope it resonates with and benefits my audience as well: the art of dealing with failure. Mastering this skill is, in my opinion, crucial for attaining any goal, as success rarely comes without encountering setbacks along the way.

Many of us, however, don't learn how to cope with failure effectively until we face it head-on. Here are some tips I've gathered from my own numerous life experiences:

  1. Learn to Take a Step Back:When faced with setbacks, I make it a point to take a breather and recharge. Monitoring my sleep and diet becomes paramount during these times. Sleep and nutrition, often underestimated, play pivotal roles in our overall well-being. Psychologists even suggest focusing on improving sleep and eating habits as a fundamental step for individuals dealing with depression. While I don't advocate a universal prescription for early bedtimes, I emphasize the importance of ensuring a good 8 hours of sleep and a bedtime between 9 - 11 PM. In terms of diet, I prioritize a balanced intake of vitamins and nutrients, supplemented with products like AG1.

  2. Reframe the Journey as a Game:Inspired by Mark Rober's insightful video on 'The Mario Effect,' I encourage everyone to view their journey as a game. Embracing the process, iterating on strategies after failures, and, crucially, not fearing the judgment of others are vital components of this mindset. Admittedly, adopting this perspective is easier said than done, but cultivating an awareness of our tendency to quit in the face of failure is a skill worth developing. Personally, I focus on practicing this mindset daily—learning not to fear failure excessively and embracing it as an integral part of my ongoing learning process.

In conclusion, I wish you a fulfilling journey in pursuing your goals. Life inevitably has its ups and downs, but I encourage you to relish both the victories and defeats, emphasizing the joy of the process itself. As a bonus, here's a visual representation of the hero's journey—a metaphorical reminder that challenges, setbacks, and eventual triumphs are integral elements of any worthwhile pursuit. Cheers to your ongoing journey!
